FHE Lesson: “He Taketh Away My Sins”

FHE Lesson: “He Taketh Away My Sins” Principle: Atonement of Jesus Christ

“Of all of the events of human history, none other approaches the Atonement of the Savior in its meaning and in its results. God be thanked for the gift of His precious Son, to whom we all owe thanks for His sacrifice in our behalf.” Gordon B. Hinckley

Video Clip: Worthy is the Lamb chapters 3–4

What is the greatest gift of all?

As your children look forward to the Easter holiday this Family Home Evening lesson and touching clip from Worthy is the Lamb will bring gratitude to their hearts for the greatest gift of all–the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Activity: Worthy is the Lamb

This spiritually uplifting activity is not just about making a fun Easter decoration, but will teach your children about the similitude of the Lamb of God and the sacrificial lamb
of old.

“The Passover feast centered on the paschal lamb, which was a sacrificial lamb, a male without blemish and with no broken bone, even after death. Likewise, Jesus was the ‘Passover,’ the ‘Lamb of God’, a male without blemish and with no broken bone, even after death. He was the Firstborn of God in the pre-mortal existence (D&C 93:21), sanctified in the flesh as were the firstborn of Israel, and slain even as were the firstborn of Egypt (Ex. 12:29).” John P. Pratt

FHE LESSON: “I Know this Church is True”

FHE Lesson: “I Know this Church is True” Principle: Bearing Testimony

“Parents and teachers should help children learn what a testimony is and when it is appropriate for them to express it. It may be best to have younger children learn to share their testimonies at such times as family home evening or when giving talks in Primary until they are old enough to do so in a fast and testimony meeting.” From First Presidency letter, 2 May 2002

Video Clip: New York: The Church Restored

Do your children know this church is true?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized on April 6, 1830. Commemorate this sacred occasion this week by watching the video clip from New York: The Church Restored to help your “children learn what a testimony is and when it is appropriate for them to express it.”

Activity: Anchored to the First Principles of the Gospel!

M. Russell Ballard said, “We often hear some members, and especially children, bear their testimonies, listing things for which they are thankful: their love of family, the Church, their teachers, their friends. For them, the gospel is something that they are grateful for, but testimonies need to be much more. They need to be anchored very early to the first principles of the gospel.” This spiritually uplifting activity will help your children’s testimonies to be just that and when the time is right they will be ready to bear testimony of the truthfulness of the restored gospel!

Treat: Chocolate “Bear” Cookies

Your children will be delighted to help make these cute and yummy Chocolate “Bear” Cookies! While your cookies bake talk to your children about the importance of feeling the Spirit in your “heart” before you bear your testimony!

FHE LESSON: Seek Praiseworthy Media

FHE Lesson: Seek Praiseworthy Media Principle: Choosing Wisely

“The choices we make in media can be symbolic of the choices we make in life. If we do not make good choices, the media can devastate our families and pull our children away from the narrow gospel path.” M. Russell Ballard, Ensign, Nov 2003

Video Clip: The Tree of Life, chapter 9

The symbols of Lehi’s dream, powerfully portrayed
in this video clip from The Animated Book of Mormon, The Tree of Life, are used to teach
families about avoiding bad media. Our media use can lead us away from the iron rod by defiling us like a fountain of filthy water and deceiving us like a mist of darkness; appearing desirable instead of ugly.

Activity: Choosing wisely the media we take into our minds!

“You wouldn’t go rifling through a trash can hoping to find a good meal, so why would you go to media with unwholesome content? Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin said ‘Just as we exercise great care about what we take into our bodies through our mouths, we should exert a similar vigilance about what we take into our minds through our eyes and ears.’” Ensign, Nov. 1995

In this mindful activity your children will have fun throwing inappropriate media in the trash can and putting praiseworthy media together, to reveal on screen, the last line of the 13th Article of Faith.

Treat: Praiseworthy Media Cake

Be sure to tune into this Praiseworthy Media Cake for a happy ending to a fun lesson! Don’t be surprised when you’re family begs for reruns of this moist & delicious Mandarin orange cake with a (licorice) twist!

Soul Surfer the movie

Support a wonderful story of faith on April 8

I am writing this to ask you to support a wonderful faith-based movie releasing on April 8th.
This film is one that every family in our community will enjoy. It’s called Soul Surfer.

This remarkable true story is based on the inspiring life of Bethany Hamilton, a young world-class surfer from Kauai who lost her arm to a shark attack. After extensive rehabilitation she not only returned to surfing but she gained something much greater than her loss—FAITH. (This clip shows how Bethany’s trial wasn’t just a physical one.)

The reason we would like you to spread the word about this film’s release is that it is essential that films like this are a box-office success. It makes it possible for high-quality family entertainment to continue to be produced.

Sony Pictures is working with us to produce another wholesome animated film, The Swan Princess Christmas for 2012. Many times we determine by film ratings what we should see and yet we still come away from the theaters feeling empty or even degraded. These filmmakers and producers are risking millions to provide us all high-quality movie choices that will increase our faith as well as entertain. This can only continue when our community of families helps support these films.

You make a difference for wholesome media!

We all can have a great nationwide impact on the Soul Surfer box office success on April 8th.
We ask you to please tell everyone you know in person, at church, and through social media to attend this film on its opening weekend and show your “vote” for quality family entertainment.

In our media-based world, many more unwholesome influences succeed than those that are “virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy.” Let’s make Soul Surfer the beginning of many more praiseworthy films by putting April 8th on our calendar and by telling everyone we know to support it.

Many thanks for your generous help for over 35 years!

Sincerely,

JARED F. BROWN
President, Living Scriptures
